OH MY...
Looks like I might have started something.
I have forgotten the date but the original agreement was that
Western Union had one portion of the business and the Bell System
had the other. If it was PUBLIC it was WUTCo. If it was PRIVATE
it was BELL.
No problem when everything was on cord boards but in the late 60s
WUTCo challenged the BELL SYSTEM as after we converted to dial
that the service was no longer private line. AND the court agreed.
We were forced to sell the entire Dial TWX network and all the machines
to Western Union.
TELEX remained the same and TWX was renamed TELEX II.
Of course TIMING IS EVERYTHING. After a few years the market for
dial teletypewriter service started to fall off. One problem was that
WUTCo was competing with itself with DESKFAX.
It is all part of history now. Too bad nobody is documenting it.

Likewise. That's almost the same time I was out here in Houston
picking up
my first Model 15.
But I don't have any (clear?) memory of TWX. How did that become TELEX?
Which is all I remember ever using. That may fall under the "Dumb
question"
category.
