[GreenKeys] Early Morkrum machine on eBay

Not sure which Great Lakes station. The Detroit Coastal Harbor call sign
was WFS. However, most stations requested and got a waiver from the FCC so
they could just identify as Detroit Marine.
Back in 1972 or 1973 when the Great Lakes was converted primary HF to
primary VHF I engineered the conversion for the Michigan Bell stations.
Lots of history was uncovered. The control terminal used directly heated
filaments. It has vogads and sonads to keep audio levels right. Also, it
all had to be reduced to being able to be controlled with an operator
plugging into a jack on a cord switchboard. Also, there was a 16 gauge toll
cable between Detroit and Pt. Huron that could not be removed until this
service was turned down.
All this stuff went away when mobile radio was deregulated by the FCC and
the distinction between wireline and non-wireline carriers went away a few
years later.
I better stop.

KPH and KSM always remind me of WAY, the Bell Coastal Comm Station for
the Great Lakes.
I worked with a couple of engineers that had worked there in various
capacities.
I must see if I can find any information on line regarding WAY.
For many years I held a restricted Radio Telephone Operators License
My "ships" call sign was WCY 3666. The original application fee was
$30.
When it came time to renew the fee had been raised to over $100. so I
gave up the license.

These Wheatstone code punches are used to prepare paper tape for
keying a (radio) transmitter. The good folks at KPH use them, as well
as the Boehme variable-speed tape readers - see:
