I was outta ham radio for about 30 years while in the biz world. I got around to buying an Icom 2 meter rig and looked at the band. It was virtually dead! Couldn't believe the activity of the 70's/80's was all gone. Quiet repeaters, simplex channels quiet too. Very few guys using them...this is northern NJ.
Now I work 60 meters and it's the new "gentleman's" band. 5 channels to operate on and nice people sharing them. The man-made QRM on 160 is awful. 75 is a "club"...new peoples usually haven't a chance after sundown.
I listen in on RTTY freqs now and then. Of course you must man the KB for the CR/LF function LOL

Sad news...
But your comments make sense...

What they didn't tell you is that the FCC reports last year 50,000 hams

Do you really think ham radio is growing? Hardly.
Again, it depends on the todays definition of either "ham" or "amateur"
radio is. . . . .
I am one who did not renew the license, but that was many years ago....
Stay well,
Dave
