Are these in fact Teletype covers/cabinets/whatever?
They look as if they might have heavy sound insulation.
Or are they simply furniture?
------------------------------------------
These desks have nothing to do with Teletype. They are called "standing
foreman's/receiving desks". Still made--- of metal.
They were/are used for storing blueprints, orders, and a myriad of
paperwork, and small tools. When you close the top, it was a slanted
working/writing surface. If you notice carefully, the paper he is taking out of the
desk, is already written on with corrections in pen/pencil.

As for the "strange stuff," It's wicker. (As in wicker seats in chairs.)
On the top and the sides to let the inside if the desk "breathe".
