Hi Everyone:
I am new to this list and wanted to introduce myself. I am
Dave, VY2AC, and the QTH is eastern Prince Edward Island,
Canada.
In the mid-80's, shortly after getting my advanced license,
I played with RTTY, using a home brew interface and an
ASR15 teletype. I later got an ASR33, and used that as a
printer for my first few computers, also with a home brew
RS232 to loop interface.
Over the years, and due to space limitations, I gave my
teletypes away. In the past number of years, I have been
building a telephone collection and museum. Part of that
collection was a good selection of teletype tools.
Recently, I was offered a 28ASR to add to a TTY display.
Last weekend, we got it home. What a monster. To lighten it
up, we took the printer, keyboard, etc out of the cabinet
(as to get it it had to go up a large number of stairs). I
re-assembled it ofter we got it to the museum.
This printer has some sort of device in the base where it
wouldn't print until its identity had been confirmed. It
had been used by a stock brokerage. I don't know what it is
called. I have to figure out how to disable that feature
before I can get it to print.
The printing perforator is filthy - it will have to be
thoroughly cleaned, and even then may have problems. The
rest of the the assembly appears to be in good shape. The
keyboard sticks, and I will have to work on that.
I have confidence I will get the old gal working again. It
has been 25 years since it was last used. I may trouble
those on the list occasionally as I go through this
process.
You can see a photo of the old gal by going to:

and clicking on the "Projects and New Items" link.
I would also eventually like to find an ASR33 for the
museum, but it would have to be loacted nearby for obvious
reasons. I am actually more familiar with the 33, as I made
many repairs on the 33 I had many years ago...
Anyway, that is my story and I am sticking to it!
Dave
