Well...
As far as "how the pros in the TELCO did it"...
When I worked in the Teletype Repair shop for New York Telephone,
(1970's) we used a SEARS dishwasher to clean our TTY's. Mashed down
the
interior plate holder "fingers", and put the typing unit in
with a half cup of dish washer detergent. The typing unit
came out looking brand new, including the felts. We then
dried it with compressed air, oiled/greased everything with
genuine Western Electric oil and grease, and ran the
machine for about an hour to warm it up.
Never had a problem with any machines we cleaned that way...
mostly 28's, but also some 15's.
Prior to this method, we used bottles and bottles of
tri-chloro...not a good idea.

Can't really think of anything to add. The late Chuck Cook W6SCR
had a Teletype repair business, before Teletype Corp. got into the
business, and I believe his procedure was a soak of the complete
machine in kerosene. Or maybe it was diesel oil. Which reminds me
of stopping at a gas station in Tennessee earlier this year and one
of the pumps was labeled kerosene - maybe that's what they sold
instead
of diesel oil - but I digress.
When I first put together a Model 15 out of parts given me by
Ray Morrison I took it all apart and used Gunk, knowing of that
substance
from the airplane business and I don't think 409 or Simple Green were
around back then (1959) I later learned from the manual that I had
taken apart some things that were not meant to be taken apart,
supposedly required special tools at the factory to assemble, but
the machine worked OK anyway.
