You have a very rare item there.

On the right side is a GRPE, the U.S. Government version of the DRPE
Punch.
For those not familiar with the DRPE (and GRPE) it is a multi-magnet
tape punch that punches tape very fast...
something like 750 WPM.

The unit on the left side is an LBXD. A model 28 twin-shaft
Transmitter Distributor that uses a multi-contact
distributor to serialize the parallel tape read.

Together they are mounted on an Receive-Transmit (RT) base.

The purpose is to be able to receive very high speed communications
information, usually on a land line..
and re-transmit the data at a slower speed, usually, but not always,
over the air via RTTY.

The paper tape supply is an 18 inch roll. There is an intermediate
tape storage bin and a large 20 inch take up reel.
All of this is fully punched chad, not chadless, and so there is
usually a chad bag with a motor-blower assist.

We have a GRPE at the museum in San Diego. LBXD TDs are relatively
common... RTs and GRPEs are NOT.
