Hi Don,
I saw a few Model 34's. They were used on Long Lines Project 176,
which was the code name for our part of the Autovon communications
system used by our Department of Defense during the Cold War. The
reason for the Model 34 was that a lot of the military communications
still ran on the 5-bit Baudot Code, and they needed access to existing
circuits and technology. My guess on the cabinet work was that the
old Model 28/29 styling was being phased out for the "modern" Model 35
styling, and with the Model 35 sheet metal as the main housings in the
production line, it was easier and cheaper to put the Model 28
components into it. The mechanical interface (motors, gears) was
identical and interchangeable. Style probably had something to do
with it, as the old Model 28 styling would have looked out of place in
a Project 176 center, where everything else had the M35 styling.
