Designed by Western Union with Teletype parts for the military in WWII, the
AN/TGC-1 was the first of the "torn-tape" tape relay systems. The MXD
tape reader (no distributor, so it is not really a "TD") was set up to
transmit multiple tape messages through the "A" & "B" tape readers. The
reader on the right was the "numbers" tape unit. It numbered all messages
sent out using a special tape with just numbers on it. The first tape to be
transmitted would be inserted into unit "A" and the start button pressed.
The numbers tape would be read for the first message number and stop and
then tape unit "A" would start. Meanwhile the operator would load the
second tape to be sent into unit "B". When the first tape ended, the
numbers unit would send out the next message number and then the second
tape would start, etc. The MXD could also be set up to feed two different
lines.

The AN/TGC-1 was first used during WWII and when I attended Teletypewriter
Repairman School at Ft Gordon, GA in 1967, they were still teaching it
(along with M14 & M15), but I never saw any in my four years in the
service.

The AWA Museum has a MXD, but it is not complete. We would bid on it but I
think shipping cost could be as much as the item itself. If anyone on
Greenkeys buys this, we would be interested in the extra tape reader head
as we are missing one.

Have fun,
