Gerry,
It's a treat to witness the abilities of a true master at a craft. I
don't know who Doug Sax is but I assume he's a grand master of music
recording/mixing. As such, he'd have spent decades really LISTENING
to the sounds and would be able to hear things that us mere mortals
might well miss.
However, a brief story from my past:
in the 1970's I worked with a fellow who wanted to buy some new hi fi
speakers for his home. A buddy of mine who even then had a well
developed ear and I took the fellow to a hi fi dealer (near Boston)
and listened to speakers. First we listened to a pair of Boston
Acuostic speakers. They sounded moderatly ok to me. Then we listened
to a pair of Kef 104's. WOW! To ME, it sounded like someone had
removed a four inch layer of cotton curtains from between me and the
orchestra. By comparison, the Boston Acoustic ones were like mud.
The difference was both clear and a huge improvement (not just subtle
differences I might or might not prefer).
Oddly the fellow bought the Boston Acoustic mud-producers!
