 To do this safely i would highly recommend that you take the Platen off before doing the soaking job.  Platens are very hard to find these days.  Remember seeing 28 platens split.  What the cause was for this is not known but whenever i cleaned 28 printers when in the working climate i always pulled the Platen off.  

A precaution that might save you headaches later on.
