All the interesting comments on early RTTY sent me searching for an
"Amateur Radio Teletype Society" price list from back in the '40s or
early '50s. Here you go:

"Brand new TeleType Corp. Model 15 Printer typing units. These are still
mounted on the original shipping blocks and are in the original
containers. Friction feed for standard 8-1/2" paper width. (A few
sprocket feed available on special request). Standard in all respects
except the following::- A microswitch in place of the Bell normally
operated by upper-case "S". An asterisk prints in the upper case "S".
Type font is standard (no fractions) with solitary exception noted
above. No ribbon furnished." $27 includes packing fee.

"Model 15 base (with black egg shell finish only). About half of these
are brand new, balance have seen some service. Late comers will get the
used ones." $21 includes packing fee.

"Model 15 keyboards, cushion keycaps, standard characters except letter
"S" which has a star in upper-case, in place of the usual word
"Bell." $21 includes packing fee."

Of course, in those days $21 was worth $21. In today's play-money they
would cost 10 times as much, maybe more.
