I think Ralph may have solved the mystery.  I was just typing a note to you 
wondering if the airline connection might be where "Mainline" came from, and 
Ralph shared that link!!  We will never know for sure, but that's sure 
logical.  I only had the pleasure to work Irv once, but found him to be a 
kind, patient ham willing to help.  I had built my first TU, a "Twin Cities 
TU" breadboard style and a simple afsk generator (I don't remember the name 
of it), hooked it to my Model 28 KSR and Heathkit 401/303 pair and went to 
transmitting.  Irv said I had so much RFI on my signal, that only his ST-6 
could have copied it, hi hi.  I'll never forget that.  I put an aluminum 
foil "tent" over it, and we finished the QSO.  Needless to say, a case was 
my next addition.  Good memories of Irv.  The ST-5AS was my next homebrew 
with an AK-1 keyer.  BIG improvement, hi.
