Bill,
I think Ralph may have solved the mystery. I was just typing a note to you
wondering if the airline connection might be where "Mainline" came from, and
Ralph shared that link!! We will never know for sure, but that's sure
logical. I only had the pleasure to work Irv once, but found him to be a
kind, patient ham willing to help. I had built my first TU, a "Twin Cities
TU" breadboard style and a simple afsk generator (I don't remember the name
of it), hooked it to my Model 28 KSR and Heathkit 401/303 pair and went to
transmitting. Irv said I had so much RFI on my signal, that only his ST-6
could have copied it, hi hi. I'll never forget that. I put an aluminum
foil "tent" over it, and we finished the QSO. Needless to say, a case was
my next addition. Good memories of Irv. The ST-5AS was my next homebrew
with an AK-1 keyer. BIG improvement, hi.
73 all,
Don, WB5HAK
