Weather wise it is now all a store and forward file transfer
system called NOAAPORT on G4R C band as IP over DVB-S QPSK. Signal is
open to the public and fully documented and open source software for
ingesting the feed and displaying the data is available. Data flow is
very fast, multiple megabits a second... and as a throwback to the old
model 28 TTY days the text in text products is mostly still upper case
only 72 column width with the standard ASCII version of the old Baudot
character set. Of course there are images (satellite and radar) and
weather maps in digital format (no Difax any more) too.
I understand the recent distribution of AP broadcast and
newspaper wires is on a leased audio stream on one of the DBS Home TV
satellites - as a signal that fed to a special modem hooked to a
dedicated PC. Printing the stories is usually done with some sort of
printer attached to the PC...
