Well I was one of them.. I used my ST-6 to drive the RS Color Computer on receive and the Color computer to drive the AFSK (AK-1) for transmit.
If you look at a ST-6 circuit diagram, you will see that the 'FSK' of the ST-6 normally drives the AFSK unit. I broke the connection there and sent the FSK (which is +- 12 volts) to the input of the Color computer and the output of the Color Computer to drive the AFSK in the ST-6.
I did not come up with this, but I believe I got the information from Bill Henry at Hal. Anyway, the FSK out of the ST-6 is sorta like a RS-232 as it takes the HV Loop and converts it to +-12 Volts.
