Most of the traffic on the air and over the web is 5 level ITA2  
usually referred to as BAUDOT.  The 33 ASR uses 8 level ASCII.  If the  
ST-8000A has a 5 to 8 level convertor you would be okay.
I do not know if it has a convertor or not.  There is a simple circuit  
layout, using a polar relay that will work to interface the machine  
with the terminal unit.
