That is quite possible - the circuit I remember first
discovering this on was a circuit to Balboa in the canal zone, active in
the mid to late 60s from time to time (I think primary was satellite by
then, but backed with HF SSB).... do think I remember running across it
elsewhere on VFT signals though...

We did that at our college radio station for election coverage
too... ran two or three machines to produce multiple copies of the
feed for groups covering various races from different studios and sites.
Couple of guys from that era went on to real broadcast careers, notably
one became a CBS news foreign corrospondant for a couple of decades
not sure if he is still working for CBS, but he was as recently as
a couple of years ago... based in London.
I also discovered in the process of that hack one could record the
VFTG signal on audio tape and play it back through a machine...
and the modem...
