Quite a few members of GreenKeys are former military (perhaps some still
active)... so I'd like to point out a site that is a nice resource for
all military -- you must be currently active, or former military - or
immediate family of a military person to join.
The site is http://www.togetherweserved.com - with a "branch" for all
five branches of the service. I'm a member of the Navy branch - and have
found several people whom I served with also on the site. But
considering the number of people that have served (vs. the number signed
up) we've only reached a small percentage - with a lot more people to
find. It costs nothing to join -- though there is a "premium
membership" that runs $20.00 per year which has more features and
benefits - however - the site is quite usable without any costs. When
you first join - you get a short complimentary "full" membership so you
can become familiar with the site and all the features available - then
choose whether to continue or fall back to the "Free level" which as
indicated - costs nothing.
They have a very large research database - and it's growing very fast as
more people provide information and sources.
If you're military (active or "ex") come check it out.
If you happen to think about it - we ("Inviters") do get credit for new
people joining that we've invited. You can either refer to my member
number 422153 when you sign up- or - go to my profile page - and there
is "button" by my name that says "Credit as Inviter".
If you'd like to see my "basic" (public) profile page - it's here:
http://navy.togetherweserved.com/profile/422153
Whether your profile is available to the public or not - is strictly
your choice (in my case I've set my for public access - but that's
something each member must do - it's not automatic).
One really GREAT feature - is that as you "build" your military
assignment history - all persons who have also "built" their history -
and share some assignment with you - are automatically listed. This
list is dynamic - and as new people add to their history - your lists
"keep up". For instance - I served aboard PROTEUS from Sept. 1971 -
Dec. 1975. Anyone else who lists PROTEUS and who's dates coincide with
mine - are automatically listed as "Also Served" for that command (I
also then show up on their "Also Served" as well).
As noted - it's military only; there are mechanisms in place to catch BS
artists and "WANNABEES" - and a formal process for dealing with such
charlatans; you set your profile to be as private as you choose- public
access or none; it costs nothing (basic membership); and has many
features and resources I won't belabor here.
Best regards...
