[GreenKeys] Methinks I am wasting my time... or am I ?

Hi, Don.

I guess some of us just don't know what to add in reply. It appears I'm a
bit younger than you since I was still in college in 1972.

It was around 1971-72 that I encountered real Teletype gear for the first
time. The Industrual Arts department at Appalachian State had a ham club, &
they acquired a full 19 table setup and a model 15 with table, along with a
load of manuals. We spent a lot of time figuring out how the things worked.

I built an audio TU from an old Handbook, using tubes and TV sweep tuning
coils instead of toroids (slug-adjustable - nice). Then we made a direct
VFO keyer mod to a TCS transmitter & with the companion reciever put the
club station on RTTY on 40 meters. For a few years afterwards I collected
Teletype parts at hamfests and repaired them for hams to use. After college
I briefly looked around to see if there was any need for a kid who could
repair Teletype machines but by then it seems those older models were
disappearing from service. Ended up working for P&G for a couple years
before entering the Air Force.

Now that is one of the great mysteries. How can we have so many labor &
time saving conveniences but still seem to be so short of time all the
time? Is it because we just keep expecting to try to do more?

> His daughter called me and said that he was "gone."

That was so sad... I'm sorry your friend is gone. I guess that part of the
difficulty in getting older is the loss of connections with others,
especially ones that share recollections, experiences, interests. Seems
like the Internet ought to be able to help some with that but not all older
people have the interest to learn how to use it.

> HAPPY NEW YEAR.

And to you, too! Keep sending...you never know who is listening with
interest and appreciation but hasn't the experience to share similarly rich
memories.

73, Don.
