I forgot to mention in my mini-history of the Mite Corp, that for a time
(1957-8), Western Union was quite interested in a teleprinter that could
compete with the Teletype Corp M28. There was talk of WU investing in Mite
(WU Technical Review, July 1957, p112), but that apparently fell through.
The Greist Manufacturing Co started out around 1890, originally as a
bicycle shop. They made everything from measuring gages to sewing machine
attachments, straight razors, and anti-aircraft guns. Their major products
seemed to have been connected to sewing machine parts/accessories and when
MITE stopped making teleprinters, they probably continued some of Greist's
products. At some point the name changed to New Haven Manufacturing.
The Apr 58 WUTR article mentions plans for a reperforator, tape reader and
"stunt box." The tape reader was to be part of the standard printer and
only increase its width by one inch. But like many dreams, it apparently
never made it to production.
