Kurt,

I once did a design for solid state replacement for a mechanical 
vibrator.  It used a 555 as you suggest and a pair of MOSFETs to 
provide alternating contact closures.  It went into existing 
equipment that generated the higher voltage ring current and don't 
recall the details of that circuitry.  Sam's 100V line transformer 
sounds like a good plan though.  Maybe even a filament transformer.
