Hi all, thanks to Mark Prather for the parts and advice and thanks to
Tom Tillson for a 1/16th hex driver my ST8000 is as good as new. I now
have 4 positions for the MODE switch instead of 10, the knobs are all
replaced and the unit is restrapped for 120VAC (instead of 240 from
Australia).
I think I will set the ST-8000 up with my harris RF-590H/RF-1310 set up
for Glass RTTY and then use My ST6 with my Central Electronics 100V /
Siemens e311e1 for my heavy metal machines.
Thanks also to Tom for visiting today with oil and donuts in tow!
Oh. While I'm here I have a question that Tom and I discovered. My 28
ASR TD is acting a little funny. Seems it has a hard time pulling tape
through. Tom and I looked at it for some time and we discovered that the
sprocket wheel that moves the tape is actually quite strong. But it
seems that the gate that closes down over the tape doesn't do a good job
of putting pressure on the tape to allow the sprockets to bite into the
tape.
We then looked at the gate and wondered if it was even the right one for
a 28. It seemed to have too many "channels" underneath than poker rods
(hows that for the technical term) that go through the chad.
Here is a photo of my "gate":

In the second picture, it looks like there are 5 channels before the
center sprocket channel and then another 3 channels. Is this correct for
a 28 ASR?

Looks to be in pretty darn good shape! Fast questions before bed.
Anyone know what size allen wrench (hex wrench) is used on the knob set
screws? The main control knob seems to be loose and I am concerned it
may be stripped. My SAE sizes seem to big or small. Is this metric?
Also, my main mode control knob (track, m/fc, sp/sh, etc) seems to have
10 positions, whereas the labeling on the panel seems to indicate only 5
. I wonder if my switch could have lost a "stop" or if there should be
10 positions?
Thanks!
Eugene
