Kevin -

Use the variac - with a fuse. Start with 50% power for at least 4 hours (I
always leave it overnight at this level), then increase 10% every two hours
until full power. That should re-form the electrolytics. I've got a complete
manual copy if you can't find one somewhere else. Last time I took it to
Kinko's for someone else, it was about $22 to make a copy including the
fold-outs. You might try www.fairradio.com or
www.ci-datastore.com/army-radio-and-communications-equipment.html (237
mostly relevant TMs on a CDROM for $17). I replaced the power connector on
mine years ago with a standard "test equipment/computer" style rectangular
power cord receptacle.

Subject: [GreenKeys] CV-89A parts & advice needed

Hi, all
I am working on rehabilitating a CV-89A. My understanding is that it has
been sitting unused, in a barn, for 35+ years. I have cleaned it up as
best I can (it had been providing a home to generations of mud daubers)
and it looks amazingly good.

It has had some "non-standard" wiring done. Specifically, it looks as if
someone removed the chassis-mount power connector and just wired in a lamp
cord. They brought out a cord with a 1/4" connector for the connection to
the loop supply (I guess that's what it's for) and there are two other
wires that I have not identified yet; one might be Ground. It appears to
be missing one tube in the Oscillator-Keyer module.

My first question is, after replacing the frayed power cord, can I safely
power it up immediately or should I bring it up slowly with a Variac?

The next question is: does someone have a manual I can get or is there
one online? I have found the schematics online.

Next question: should the Power Input connector be like the other
three-pin connectors on the rear? Is there a reasonable substitute I can
use? Does anyone have spare connectors I could buy?

The plastic (Lexan?) covering of the CRT screen is a bit brownish and
brittle but still intact. Does anyone have a good spare of that I could
buy?

I could send photos, particularly of the wiring job, if anyone needs or
wants it.
