Bill,
Well, a common 33 TWX already has a modem in the pedestal. The extra
weight is about 40 lbs, so it is harder to move around. Just enough to make it
a too much for one person to lift easily.
You could have a TWX and a friend could have one and you could call each
other over the phone lines which was roughly the way the system worked
originally. The TWX modem sent and received with tones. In Originate, send was
1070 space and 1270 mark and receive was 2025 space and 2225 mark. Answer
mode was the opposite. I had to look that up. LOL. I'm sure that Jack
would not have to. You might be able to connect thru an interface between
the TWX and radio transceiver. Only amateur radio guys would want that.
Maybe Jack can answer that one.
Most 33's interfaced to computers used current loop full duplex with the
computer echoing back what you sent to it if that's what you wanted. Lots
of other different interfaces too, depending on the computer, most of which
I am not familiar with. We never had to fix that end, just the 33.

I'm surprised that TWX machines wouldn't bring that much. Couldn't a
buyer just hook the TWX machine up to a modem, or do they "have to" have
that classic look and feel?
BTW, can a TWX machine be changed to full duplex?
TIA.
