Gil,
Sounds like you and the kids have done a lot of work for NASA. I'm
impressed. Hope you win the top prize.
Merry Christmas.

Greenkeys has not heard much from me lately, but I am still here
checking in for admin stuff, usually every day. Life has been busy as
usual: hauling kids around, sitting at baseball practices in the cold,
trying to keep my cub scouts interested, finding reasons to buy new
camera lenses, and attempting to play a little guitar with my son. Have
not had much time for teletypes unfortunately, though I do have a few I
want to work on.
For the last couple of months I have been coaching my daughter's
sixth-grade aerospace team -- we won a spot in the finals a week ago.
Out of about 1000 kids, in 250 teams from across Arizona, my team of
four kids is one of six teams that compete in the finals Dec 31. While
we may not win in finals, just getting there was a big thing for our
team and school. We designed a lunar station including artificial
gravity, robotic vehicles to mine the moon's surface for helium-3, a
launch pad with various support craft for moving cargo and crew to/from
the surface to spacecraft in lunar orbit, developed a plan for missions
to Mars including in-orbit fueling of an ion-engine Mars craft, provided
details for habitation, air, water, food, recreation, shielding and
power systems for a crew of 40 for two years, etc. We built a scale
model, wrote a 50-page paper, and survived a day of grilling by judges
from Honeywell. Now the kids need to give a formal presentation in
front of engineers and a half-dozen NASA astronauts. The winner gets an
on-field presentations at the Fiesta Bowl, and a behind-the-scenes tour
of the Johnson Space Center. We've got our fingers crossed.
