That was a great synopsis of the work they did with AM's.

RE: Phase modulation....it was once proffered that in order to make AM
stations more competitive with the FM's...quality wise....that the AM
carrier be phase modulated.  A few degrees of phase modulation would then be
sent into a receiver with many multiplier stages resulting in the phase
modulation becoming frequency modulation!  I thought that was an ingenious
idea.  The FM'd AM signal would thence be detected by a ratio or
discriminator detector and then,  FM quality.

Nothing ever came of it ! ! ! !
