The Big Black Button is a "repeat" key.  If you dare to push it, it will 
cause the solenoid to go into a rapid punching of  diddles if I remember 
correctly to advance the tape without characters.

I think it uses self interrupting contacts to act like a DC buzzer .  I 
finally fired up mine after finding a 100 VDC, high current, power supply to 
run the solenoid.
