[GreenKeys] Non-felt friction clutches?

I just started working on an old W.U. 2-B printer that was stored in a
barn for a long time.  Sad sack - most of the moving parts are stuck,
so I'm oiling liberally and waiting.

I took off the selector, and instead of felt washers in the friction
clutch it has washers of some black composition material.  Anybody
else ever see anything like this?
