Jess,
I think you may be confused between the Baudot Mulptiplex system which
is synchronous and uses a distributor and the later start-stop
telegraphy which is asynchronous, is a simplex system (hence no
distributor) and uses the International Telegraph Alphabet No 2. ITA 2
is commonly called Baudot, but differs in a number of ways from Baudot's
original code and Murray's subsequent code.

The actual mechanical decoding method varies from model to model. Did
you have one in mind? I'm familiar with Creed machines myself, so if you
want to know how a Teletype works another member of Greenkeys will be
able to oblige.
