Hi Jesse:
The short answer: Each character syncs based on the beginning of the
start bit -- the receiver times from there to sample the presumed
center of each bit. Since the start bit is a Space state, and the
stop bit is a Mark state, characters may be transmitted with no
additional delays between them, as the beginning of the Start bit is
always recognizable by the receiver.
