Mark,
Is it the horizontal shaft from the type wheel back through the code cage
that is not turning?? There is a throw-out clutch that is supposed to
engage after the selector levers have been put in the right positions, is
that operating? Have you tried turning the motor by hand to see what is
happening? If you are lucky, you may just need some lubrication on the
clutch mechanism.
Its been a year or so since I was inside a TT-76 and don't have a manual
right here, but I have access to one. You may need to find yourself a
manual (TM 11-5815-238-35) . I haven't been able to find a free one on
the Internet (LOGSA has the TT-76 manuals, most are available, but for some
reason you need a password for the -35 manual.), but you can probably buy
one somewhere. Just Google the TM number.
I was any Army TTY repairman 40 years ago and I now volunteer at the
Antique Wireless Assoc. Museum. Next time I am at the Museum (Mon or Tues)
I'll take a look at one of our TT-76s and then maybe I can help you a
little better (if you haven't fixed it by then). We have a AN/GRC-46 that
is complete & operational and we are also working on getting a GRC-142
together. (have most of the basic components of the 142 and have a line on
an empty 142 shelter.)
Good luck,
