Thanks for that it does work. After a while I found some of the 
idiosyncrasies of the search engine on the page link
http://images.google.com/hosted/life
It finds nothing on a search for Washington, but with George Washington 
it finds lots, including engravings from the 1790s. Similarly Telephone 
finds nothing but Telephone exchange, Telephone Operator, etc find 
varying amounts of detail. Further more, each individual image page 
lists its keywords and clicking those bring up a host of further finds. 
There's also a box on the RH side of related images which didn't seem to 
appear in the main search.

I wasted a couple of hours trawling through the pictures yesterday. Too 
fascinating for words! Try Communications as a keyword. Even more stuff 
to browse through.
