I'd definitely go with stranded. You don't want to be tracing down
opens in the wire when the solid conductors break due to flexing. Try a
local shop that does business telephone systems (or just visit the trash
container behind their office). The big distributors (Allied, Mouser, etc.)
sell a near-infinite variety of cable if you want a more professional
appearance.
