[GreenKeys] black M28ASR ?

AHHH now I know. LIONEL colors... Blue and Orange. Or possibly a
frustrated Chicago Bears fan!
Since I have been a life long preservationist my attitude has always
been to keep things as original as possible.
Being a docent and a curator also keeps me on the straight and narrow.

I guess my life is simpler than most because I don't worry about the
"correct" color for a machine! Back when I got my first machines they
weren't exactly pristine so I felt that painting was a good idea.
But I
always followed the rule that the right color was what pleased me.
Over
the years there were several colors including a miserable blue and a
Ford
gunmetal gray but I finally settled on black. And I certainly never
worried
about some little previous scratch showing through. But the machine
had to
work! Today I have standardized on the green that Teletype used for
it's
flexible windowed manual covers. You can get that at any TrueValue
hardware
store. At the risk of horrifying many, I will admit I chose it
because I
wanted something to complement my desire to paint the shack walls
orange.
Oh yes, following the recommendations frequently given in the scanty
literature of the early 70's the original wiring was the first thing
to go
and the original lamps have been replaced with small fluorescent
fixtures!
By this time you've guessed I'm not interested in a museum piece---but
they
have to send and receive! Visitors to the shack seem to be more
impressed
if things light up, motors hum and the keyboards have some effect on a
machine across the room! And not one of those fine old devices has ever
complained of my changes!

28ASR. I have a smooth black 28KSR cabinet that came from a railroad
office
in Chicago. I'm not sure which railroad. It's not that you are seeing
because that is on the opposite side of the building. If you are talking
about the 28ASR in the 05NavySide picture, that is actually a high gloss
gunmetal gray metalic, some Toyota color. I got that one from Bob
Camp. He
got it from someone that had it professionally painted if I remember the
story correctly. It's got a few scratches on it, but still pretty
nice. I
also have a bright blue 28ASR that Bill Strangfeld gave me. He thought
it to
be an original color.

by the choices of grays that are off-the-shelf (we had a prior
discussion on
colors). This ASR looks to have been previously painted with a different
gray than standard, and I want to strip it and give it a new paint job
(but
I can't afford a custom color at a body shop). It has the same subtle
texture that my 28KSR has -- is that what they call "orange-peel?"

satin black would look good on my ASR. Was wrinkle-black the only
factory
black M28 finish, or was black with that standard-28-texture also
available?
Barring a proper green-gray, which looks to need a custom mix, I am left
with a lighter navy-looking gray or black, as my Rustoleum off-the-shelf
options.

previous-owner-added paint without affecting the underlying original 28
paint? I want to retain the original texture. If I can't strip it off
properly, I suppose I could just give it a good degrease with
laquer-thinner, and a mild roughing with a scratch pad.

offer the following. Please let me apologize for the rough pictures, I
just
scooted stuff around just enough to get a shot. You can see that the WU
cabinet is considerably larger than the Navy cabinet.
