This was originally replied to on 11/12 - unfortunately - I apparently
hit "Reply" vs. Reply All - so it only went to one person...
Here it is again - to the list this time...
The question was asked:
> Does anyone have a source for ribbons that will work on the Teletype ASR 33?
I went up on Nukote's website and used their "finder" thing - which has
you select type of device (ink jet, laser, impact, etc.), then the
manufacturer - then the model - and sure enough - the 28 is listed.
However - when I chose that - it noted that they don't currently have
that specific replacement ribbon - but suggested that I contact them -
as they are adding stuff all the time. So I sent them an email - listed
what I had. I got a quick response noting that their number B76 was a
functional replacement (as it's what they make for the old Underwoods,
Remingtons, etc.) but that they weren't as heavy duty as the original
teletype ribbons. So that I could see if they would do for me - they
were sending me a sample to test. Sure enough a couple days later - a
box shows up - with a six-pack box of ribbons. These are made in China
- but packaged, etc. in TN. They are very fresh (as opposed to NOS
that's been sitting on some shelf a long time), and so far work fine in
my 28. They have the eyelet at the ends for the reversing mechanism and
come with both a supply and take-up spool.
Most office supply places carry Nukote - or you might try Nukote's
website (nukote.com). Not sure they're in the mood to dole out a zillion
six-pack samples for free - but I don't suppose it'd hurt to stick a few
hands out... They probably have ribbons to fit most all of the TTYs...
As always - YMMV...
