Actually - it's not a short bed - I'll measure it when I'm next there - 
but IIRC it's somewhere between 6 and 8 feet...

There *used* to be a driver lathe at one of the RR shops here in 
Meridian - IIRC it could handle 60". I'll ask around.  The monsters that 
used to run in my neighborhood ran 80" drivers... aren't many lathes 
that can handle those.
