Hi Larry:

Reading the theory for the BR MD-1142 HF modem that in band fades occur 
differently for frequency offsets of a few kHz.  The BR modem uses combined 
multiple tones and time offsets for a very redundant transmission.

So I think you will get the best results tuning to the band that has the 
strongest signal and using two different antennas (either separated by distance 
or polarization).
