Larry,

I'm stretching the memory cells here, but the basic idea the Navy taught
me about diversity was to receive the same signal on two frequencies.
The diversity units actually worked on signal strength. We set all
receivers' output to 0 dBm, so when one faded, the other would still
provided clean copy. It was very seldom that both would fade
simultaneously. Although, if you weren't paying attention, the second
might fade out after the first was long gone. You could also QSY one
receiver while the other kept copying the signal. It was standard
practice to keep two receivers up on the multi-channel broadcasts, which
were commonly transmitted on five frequencies simultaneously. Diversity
on single channel signals wasn't as common. Of course, it was relatively
easy with synthesized receivers locked to a stable frequency standard.
The R-1051B was the most common HF receiver of that era in the tin-can
service.
