Hi folks:

Forwording for Dave, who is having posting issues. His post problems may
be due to AOL -- are there AOL users out there who know what he needs to do
to set plain-text etc and get his posts to make it to greenkeys?

thanks,

gil

>A few days ago, Greg Moore, this list, invited several folks to join the
>CommCenter at yahoogroups.com list. The invitation still stands. I wanted
>to take a few minutes to explain what the CommCenter list is, and why
>it exists, because several folks have asked. Others on this list who have
>no knowledge of CommCenters frequently have asked questions (on
>Greenkeys) regarding specific pieces of teletype gear, or what AUTODIN
>is, or what a tape relay was, not knowing the sources of the equipment
>that they now have in their possession (most of which, if former military
>or surplus military) probably came out of a military CommCenter at one
>time. During the Vietnam War, the US military operated over 10,000
>CommCenters worldwide -- and that's a lot of teletype gear. (The Navy
>alone retired 70,000 pieces of teletype gear by itself in the late 1980s).
>Much was junked, some was sold off as surplus, and a lot was simply
>given away (MARS, etc), auctioned off, or donated, usually in large
>numbers. A lot may still be stored away in the DoD Logistics Systems
>and Federal Supply System, and will most likely remain there for the
>next 30+ years - or until it is once again (found) and rediscovered, as
>always happens every few years.
>
>In any event, the CommCenter lists offers a forum for those who may
>be interested in discussing the various aspects of CommCenter-specific
>and RATT-specific interests for subjects - and answers not found on
>this list. The CommCenter list also has an extensive files, links and photos
>section, which may be of interest, with new items being added from time
>to time.
>
>The CommCenter list also talks about crypto systems, circuits (links),
>means, historical comms and messages, legacy systems, and similarly
>related topics of mutual interest, since most military comms were
>transparent to each other, and to most of the rest of the US Govt (who
>all generally used the same systems at one time or another).
>
>As such, the CommCenter list may provide an opportunity to clear
>up some of the misconceptions and misinformation about some
>equipments and installs that have shown up on the Greenkeys list
>from time to time.
>
>It is apparent that there are many folks on the Greenkeys list who
>are not familiar with what a "CommCenter" is or what, or how it relates
>to RATT or "RTTY". There is a significant difference, at least in the
>military sense. So, for anyone who wants to know, come see us on
>CommCenter, and feel free to ask lots of questions. It might give one
>and all a better idea as to how your older military equipment was used
>(and sometimes - abused)
>
>Normally, the CommCenter list is open to current, former and retired
>miltitary folks who worked in and around CommCenters (Communications
>Centers, Telecommunications Centers, Data Telecom Centers, Tele-
>comunications Terminals, Shipboard CommCenters, Army Field and
>Tactical CommCenters, AUTODIN Message Switching Centers, Torn
>Tape Relay Stations, any NATO equivalent stations which interconnected
>with US stations, Theater CommCenters, All Army Signal Corps and
>USASA CommCenters, NAVSECGRU, and Air Force facilities. In addition,
>the CommCenter list accepts Technical Controllers, Patch and Test
>Facilities, Facilities Control (FAX Control), Crypto and TTY Maint and
>all others whose military work associated them with the operation of
>CommCenters. While this may not mean a whole lot to some, it may
>provide a lot of answers to others, particularly if you are interested in
>"operations", "messaging", "histories", or have questions, or just
>want more information. The CommCenter list also includes former
>CRITICOMM and SPINTCOMM folks, as well as RATT operators and
>special purpose communicators, and all of the CommCenter support
>folks. You might see a military-formatted message or two every now and
>then for interest.....in various formats.
>
>The CommCenter list is NOT (repeat NOT) a ham radio, hobby radio, DX, UTE or
>experimenters list. That sort of discussion is discouraged, since most
>topics need to be about military comms, specifically "record message
>communications", or in regard to the printed or data message.....and all
>of the details that pertain to them, equipment installations, publications,
>et al - or any aspect of technical control, carrier attendant, multichannel
>support (MUX), and so on.
>
>Past procedure has been to restrict the CommCenter list to former
>and retired military members. We will make a one-time exception to
>the policy by allowing anyone on the Greenkeys list to join us because
>there seems to be a great deal of interest in both the teletype equipment,
>and how it might have been used. In most cases, someone from the
>CommCenter list might be able to answer some of the questions for you.
>Teletype equipment was the "backbone" of the CommCenter business,
>until the advent of computers....
>
>This invite applies only to the Greenkeys members.....
>
>To get to the CommCenter list, send a blank email to:
>
>CommCenter-subscribe at yahoogroups.com
>
>Be sure to include a brief, but complete bio about your comms
>experiences, particularly if military. If non-military, state your interests
>briefly in your subscription request. Please, no vague statements like
>"I want to join your list.....". or "I think this is a cool list....."
>
>Upon acceptance of your subscription request, you will receive two
>automated messages for your information. Please take the time to read
>them. Feel free to contribute to the list after that.
