You betcha! But then, it wasn't hard work, and I didn't wrench on my
own car in those days so that was my "gear head" time.
Fred in Fort Lauderdale (Typetronics) always had the gears, or had a
line on them. Never had to buy them from Fair Radio, who I thought
were a bit too proud of them.
There are Four issues about this set (TT-98) for amateur use.
1. Non-metallic gears need replacement ASAP after acquisition.
Phenolic gears BAD. Metal gears GOOD.
2. Parts ARE rare, so a Re-Build could be lengthy and daunting with
the end of Fred's inventory.
3. The built-in LOOP supply confuses many users. Made me nuts for a
month. All our TU designs at the time called for the LOOP to be
integral with the TU. Requires a bit of Field Engineering...
4. The STOP relay will develop an EMF spike of sufficient voltage to
kill the Keying Transistor in most solid state TU's deader than Disco.
I felt like I went through a coffee can full of 2N5655's/MJE 340's.
Finally adapted a solid-state relay module for this purpose (motor
control). Cleared up the problem
Mine were both ex-Federal (FAA, I think...it was 35 years ago) and
looked pretty nice.
One of the joys of my life was getting my TRS-80 (Model 1) to output
to it.
73 for a Prosperous 2008
