I don't know about this specific guy or what he does "to" the motors - 
most of them don't "do" anything except for replacing the gear with a 
spark-gap assembly.  You can build a Tesla (note the s before the l) 
coil with a stationary (fixed) spark gap - but the really spectacular 
units use a rotary gap - usually variable speed, and compressed-air 
quenched. Teletype motors - being synchronous - are desirable to them 
because they will "lock-up" to the line frequency - making a more 
efficient harmonic generator. There are, of course - other ways of 
accomplishing the same thing - but surplus teletype motors are a 
convenient and (usually) inexpensive way to get the job done. The motor 
pictured appears totally stock - a question to the seller would probably 
confirm one way or the other.

In this smaller coil (yeah, right - but you'll see what I mean in a bit) 
you can easily see the rotary gap fire at the base of the coil assembly.

Here is a "serious" coil - the spark gap isn't as easy to see fire - but 
it's at the bottom as well...

Unless someone is doing something "weird" - they should need only to 
have any missing parts, etc. put back. Again - this one looks 
un-molested... but I'd certainly ask the seller.
