Hi Doug,
Some M32 machines had 60 wpm gears. Those that were used for other
customers than WUTco TELEX. Some also had 75 and 100 wpm gears.
Fred Schmidt, may he rest in peace, sent me the last 60 wpm gear he
had hoping I could find somebody to make them. The gear is still in
the parts cabinet at the SDSU Library with the rest of the museum stuff.
Four of us got together and figured out how to make the gear but it is
not a simple job. It involves several steps and a "knack" to
accomplish.
1. You need to make a mold from a good gear.
2. You need to make a center bushing out of an special material that
does not wear easily.
3. You need to cast the gear with a specially formulated resin and
use a vacuum pump to remove any microscopic bubbles in the mix.
Only one member of our four person team knows how to get the job done
and I am not at liberty to say who that is. If he is interested in
making any more I am sure he will reply to the list.

Seems like I remember hearing that most 32s were geared for 67 WPM
Telex service, but I believe that there were 60 WPM gears available.
Don, or others who have worked on more of them than me with my one,
can better answer that. However, with the demise of TTY Fred and the
state of his parts warehouse being unknown, I don't know where you'd
be likely to find any.
