Hi Jerry:
I asked your question on the Singing wires list server (Telephone Collectors)
and got the answer.
The older phone systems had a protector just inside the house with two long
fuses with a nut on each end. The can wrench would fit these. But there were
also similar fuses inside at terminals and these had a nut on one end and the
screw was slotted. The real can wrench has a flat blade screwdriver inside the
socket wrench so you could hold the screw and turn the hex wrench to get the
fuse out of the can.
