While I've assumed this is common knowledge - I'll go ahead at this time
and note that there are several errors (that I've found so far) in this
manual. While most appear to be just "OCR recognition" errors - and
often are obvious and easy to correct from other info in the book - a
couple aren't. One specific instance is that the early motor (teletype
designation LMU1) is mis-identified as PD-111/U - it's actually PD-17/U
(which isn't in the book anywhere). The PD-17 was only used on two
teletypes - the TT-47/UG and TT-69/UG - and they are considerably
different.
Don: In a conversation with me the other day you mentioned you didn't
think you'd ever seen a "pre" MK-1 - Best I can tell - they only existed
in the TT-47 (which was never shipped to civilians) and the TT-47A -
which was only shipped a few years (roughly 1953-1957) - and probably
not that many were shipped during that time. The "main-stream" model
seems to be the TT-47B - which shares it's "time" and many, many parts
with the first ASR - which shipped in 1957. These contained the LK4xxx
series key boards - (LAK4xxx in the case of the ASRs) which had a long,
long run (and I suspect are the MKIs).
If anyone is interested in how this reference data is "shaping up" so
far - here is a link to a "first cut - VERY rough" version of the TT-47
series...

Here is the Model 28 from contract (1948) to last version shipped to the
Navy (TT-47L/UG) (date unknown at this time).
best regards...
