CNET uses an Asterisk open source PBX to interconnect the
electromechanical switches. Asterisk runs on a Linux
platform. Interfacing to the "legacy" equipment is done
using FXO/FXS ports, T1 channel banks, Routers or ATAs. The
calling information is entered into the Asterisk switch via
normal POTS methods, the Asterisk switch sets up a VOIP
connection to another Asterisk switch and the distant
Asterisk switch pulses into the distant legacy equipment.
A "DNS" server is maintained to handle the numbering plan.
Basically there are no "real" trunks as the interconnections
are done over the internet.
