That's the thing - I'm almost positive I've had some "A"s over the years
- and all of mine had blowers. So you may be quite right about either a
formal "field change" - or an informal one that was just done by
individual commands. I know if I could just "bolt on" a blower by
ordering a spare part - I bloody well would.
That also begs the question about the access plate on the "unmodified"
"A"s - it's like they were designed for a blower - (with the connector
angled underneath, etc.) and then "someone" made the decision to leave
them off and just "blank" the hole. I noticed in the original issue of
the manual (NS91278 Hoffman 1949) they "tout" the sealed cabinet... so
by the time the manual was printed this seemed more important than
ventilation. The manual also states that all tubes (save the CRT) should
be pulled and tested every 500 hours. That indicates they were aware
that the tubes in that environment would "cook"... Really strange!
