Hi

Be very careful with this approach on solid state equipment.  Solid  
state voltage regulators do not "expect" long term low input voltage.  
You can get all sorts of odd behavior. Some of it can be destructive  
to the attached circuits. A negative 12 V  "up and running" with no +5  
or +12 is one classic example.
