This being off-topic on Greenkeys is the reason I answered the way I 
did- but Jack is quite correct. I never met Gary face to face - but I 
had corresponded with him on several occasions "back in the day". One 
particular instance was when I was writing the high-speed serial handler 
for NorthStar's implementation of TurboDOS - and was having some issues 
for which I sought (and received) advice from Gary (NO ONE knew the ins 
and outs of the 8080 / Z80 architecture like he did - particularly when 
it came to pressing for max throughput).

I just happened to be back in California for a programmers / developers 
conference at San Jose shortly after he died - and was able to attend a 
memorial for him (summer of 1994).

Yes, I too have several NorthStars still running - and while they run 
TurboDOS these days - it's certainly easy enough to boot from a CP/M 
floppy and get the A> prompt (NorthStar Horizons ALL boot from the 
floppy - even if they have hard disks attached).
