I have a ST-8000A and, with information from Bill
Henry, came to an "easy" and clean solution. My unit
has an unused panel hole and cover plate next to the
normal, but expensive connector.
I found a Canon panel connector of the correct
physical size (the four mounting holes line up, so no
drilling) and a mating cable connector in my junque
box. Connections to the PC board inside are made with
IDCs (insulation displacement connectors) on the
board's header pins, so you can simply buy the right
size IDCs and run wires from the IDCs to the new panel
connector.
Of course, you will have to have some information
about the pinout of the expensive connector and trace
the wires to the existing IDCs on the board.
