I'd like to introduce myself. I've been receiving mails now for about a
month.I figure it is time to say hello.

I hope you don't mind me listening in. I've been in the computer field for
30 years. But, I'm not a ham yet. Please don't hold that against me. I'm
working on it. I've been studying and intend to take the test in late
November or early December. After that, I want to get some real good
experience on the air and eventually get into RTTY.

I plan to do RTTY using a teletype, using a 32ASR that Wayne (who is active
in this group and many of you know) is helping to set up. He ran into a
stumbling block because there is a bad telex board in the unit so the 32 is
stuck until he can find a replacement. I thought about bidding on the 32
from California and sending it to him, but I saw that some of you wanted
that unit so I stayed away. I don't really need the 32, but I'd like to get
my 32 interface working and we need to find the right part or I need to find
a different 32.

Why the teletype for RTTY? People tell me that is silly or they say it is
hard. Well, I'm a purist who wants to recreate things as they were inthe
70s. And I have a soft spot for the teletype because my first contact with a
computer was in 1975 and it was done via a teletype. That started my career.
I was a regular teletype user until 1979. I have fond memories of those
times. In fact, I have a special version of an ASR 33 that has a tape editor
that was used to create paper tapes for CNC machines (before they started
using magnetic tape). I am preserving this editor becasue it is probably the
last of its kind.

I'm also looking for a plain 33ASR that I can hook up to some old computers
I have to recreate the experience of '75-'79. I won't dare destroy my tape
editor for this purpose, so I'll have to keep looking for another 33.

Anyway, excuse my ramblings. And again.... hello.

Paul Heller
